The Seven Year (ish) Itch

Catching up on the shows from the International fashion weeks I was quite taken aback to see the black and white images of Marilyn Monroe featured in Dolce and Gabbana’s latest collection. As a whole this collection was stunning and very strong visually; a blend of androgyny and uber ladylike, with checks and leopard prints and a touch of cheeky surrealism- in short, the kinds of clothes women want to wear. But what to make of the Marilyns? Personally, I have a surprising lifelong love of the ‘blonde bombshell’ but these prints called to mind those Anya Hindmarch inspired bags we all had, say seven (ish) years ago. And they were a bit naff, non? Loved at the time but, I thought, definitely no way they would ever see a resurgence. I just can’t make up my mind if this is ok or not, it reminds me of the trend for Disney t-shirts we have been seeing since Carrie donned her Disney Couture Mickey tee in series six of the show. To borrow from Bradshaw, “It got me to thinking: is this trend magic, or plain tragic?”

H&M are already selling a baby pink t-shirt with a darker pink print of Marilyn on. I can see myself wearing this t-shirt (although I much prefer the James Dean ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ t-shirt also in store). Save from wearing the woman herself, do we think people will be adopting the 1950s pin-up style again. This was very in fashion when I was 18, which was fab for me as the aforementioned H&M stocked affordable and fun halter tops, bowling shirts and poodle print paraphernalia. If we consider how fashionable ‘burlesque’ etc is again (sorry to those for which this is not just ‘fashion’) and how popular acts such as Katy Perry are at the moment (her style is undeniably important to her success and notoriety, music acts never get by on musical talent alone) I think we can safely say it’s likely. I think I’m faintly giddy at the idea of dressing as I did at one of the most exciting times in my life, but perhaps history, and some trends, shouldn’t be repeated.

Three images from the Dolce and Gabbana catwalk. Me just turned 18, my Marilyn wannabe phase, and me at my 18th birthday party, 1950s themed dressed as Marilyn in a beautiful red dress from Oxfam.
