On Saturday two of my good friends married each other. Their wedding was so personal, it was very 'them'. The bride had basically handmade the whole wedding and parts of it were quite irreverent in the most amusing way; she had turned the tutu I bought her for her hen into the wrapping around her bouquet (and the elastic waistband served as her garter!), the tables were named after divorced celebrity couples, the wedding cake was decorated with Metallica lyrics and after their first dance the Reel Big Fish song 'Suckers' came straight on ("This one's for all the suckers who still believe in love"). This is why I knew it would be the kind of wedding that I could wear a car print outfit to.
It turns out weddings in March are quite tricky to dress for, you don't really want to wear anything too wintery (like the burgundy velour I wore to a December wedding), you want to wear Spring colours but its a bit too nippy to wear anything too summery. I really struggled with this brief as I wanted a new outfit but there really was nothing in the shops that seemed appropriate for the occasion, the time of year and my figure. I had seen the car print outfit in Primark and my mind kept going back to it. I have always enjoyed a bit of Carrie Bradshaw dressing i.e. theming your outfit to the occasion, and so the fact that the groom is a mechanic sealed the deal. I also thought the fact that the outfit was lemon yellow and floaty and pleated still made it wedding appropriate.
I love the whole 1950s car, flaming dice trend as I have always had a thing for the 1950s Americana aesthetic (the couple who got married are on the right in this picture (bottom) from my 1950s themed 18th birthday party), so I am glad that the trend by Prada has been picked up on the high street.
I don't really have a picture of myself in the outfit, so this will have to do:
It's not the most flattering on me (the top is sleeveless and I have 'fanny armpits' and a broad back and the dress is calf length and I have bulky calves) and I think I would have preferred it in the blue but hey, it was a quirky little bargain.
I had to accessorise in a hurry so I stupidly ended up wearing red shoes, a purple bag and a green belt (in my defence all of those colours are in the print) but I did love my accessories. This was the first time I have used this bag despite having it for years. It was £1 from the Sue Ryder sale at Nettlebed hospice, and the belt I love because of the colour and the fact that I choose to believe it has my, and the brides initial, 'L' on it....
